Coffee’s rich tradition dates back to the 1600’s when Ottoman Turks
began trading the green bean (which, when roasted, yields black
gold) with Europeans. This trade led to a coffee revolution in
Europe in the mid 1700’s and, as a result of increased demand,
coffee growing expanded from the horn of Africa to Asia, the
Pacific, Central America, the Caribbean and South America.
Jim Cannell’s coffee odyssey began more than 20
years ago on Wall Street. He happened upon the coffee industry by
chance. In his first job as a Wall Street coffee trader, his boss
ordered, “OK kid, here’s a desk, pick up the phone.” Thus an odyssey
in the green (unroasted) coffee business began and Cannell became a
coffee entrepreneur, connoisseur and leader in the organic movement.
Cannell’s first company, The Organic Coffee
Company, was sold to Allegro Coffee, now a subsidiary of Whole Foods
Markets. His present company, Jim's Organic Coffee, roasts more than
40,000 pounds of coffee beans a month and sells wholesale to
groceries, markets, fine restaurants and bakeries, through the
website.
Cannell has traveled extensively to coffee
origins, giving him an expert perspective on organic coffee methods
and knowledge of how these procedures environmentally and
economically affect the farms and farmers.
“Just because a
country offers an organic coffee is no reason to put my name on it,”
he says. “My selections are based on outstanding and consistent cup
quality proven over the years. Sure, we see plenty of samples of
coffees with interesting names and funky stories attached to them.
Yet, I believe it is the quality of the cup that brings your
customers back again and again.”
